Continuation of a Visit to the Venice Art Biannale -Oct 10-14/2026

Giardini (here) Arsenalle (here)

Notable Off-Site Exhibits and Projects all around Venice

Beyond the main 2 Biannale locations, at the Giardini and Arsenale, other 46 external national pavilions and 31 official collateral events, are showcased alongside major independent museum and venues, scattered across the city's historic palazzi and churches.

The Vatican (acting as the Holy See) regularly participates in the Venice Biennale with its own national exhibition space, though it does not have a permanent brick-and-mortar pavilion building inside the central Giardini or Arsenale like some other nations. Instead, the Holy See sets up its exhibitions at varying, unique cultural or historical sites across Venice.

It is centered on the concept of listening and is inspired by the work and figure of the 12th C German woman Saint and Doctor of the Church, Hildegard of Bingen.

She was known as an esteemed writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, and as a medical writer and practitioner of the Catholic Church.

She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most recorded in modern history.

The exhibition spans in 2 specific Venice locations:

At a Garden (Cannaregio district) + At a Church (Costelo District)

I. The Mystical Garden of the Discalced Carmelites -

Situated in a 17th-c enclosed monastic space (usually closed to the public)

Giardino Mistico dei Carmelitani Scalzi, Cannaregio District 54, is set

right behind the Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth (Chiesa degli Scalzi) and

near the Santa Lucia railway station

The Garden functions as an Acoustic Sanctuary.

Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist & Ben Vickers in collaboration with Soundwalk Collective, the Garden as a "sonic prayer" invites visitors to slow down and practice contemplative listening.

A custom bioacoustic instrument built by the firm, translates the real-time bioelectric activity of the garden's plants, soil, and wind, into an evolving ambient soundscape. Moving through the grounds while experiencing headphone-based and site-specific sound, commissions reinterpreting the 17th C Hildegard of Bingen's chants and philosophy from prominent creators,

II.The Second Venue - Church

Complesso di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice - at Castello District.

also known locally as San Gioacchin is set at Fondamenta S. Gioachin, in the eastern part Castello  near Via Garibaldi and the Ponte San Gioachino bridge.

Opening hours: 11 am - 7 pm (May to Sept.), 10 am - 6 pm (Oct. to 22 Nov) (no reservation required)

This venue has been transformed into a contemporary scriptorium and living archive, that explores the legacy of the mystic Saint Hildegard of Bingen.

The exhibit displays research, texts, and a final visual presentation by the late German filmmaker Alexander Kluge,

It deliberately integrates scaffolding and construction elements into the presentation, to maintain the raw feeling of an architectural site under active restoration.

<<The Chiesa di Santa Maria Ausiliatrice

is a late 19th-c Benedictine and Salesian building complex.

The Bahamas Pavilion

Location: at the San Trovaso Art Space  Dorsoduro 947,

The Bahamas Pavilion returns to the Venice Biennale for the first time in 13 years, marking only the second appearance in the nation's history.

Titled "In Another Man's Yard", the exhibition features an inter-generational dialogue between the late revered Bahamian pioneer multidisciplinary master artist of post-Independence Bahamas, John Beadle  (1964–2024)

in tandem and ending his enduring legacy, with new, densely layered hybrid creations, by his former student.-the critically acclaimed contemporary visual artist Lavar Munroe, (Born 1982)  Bahamian-American artist

Both Beadle’s and Munroe’s work, curated by Dr. Krista Thompson. is deeply rooted in Bahamian artistic and social practices, like the visual philosophy and resilient spirit of Junkanoo - the national cultural processional festival and street parade of The Bahamas,

Junkanoo, is celebrated with vibrant costumes, rhythmic percussion, and energetic dancing that continues to inspire generations of Bahamian

The tradition began in the 18th C, during British colonial rule, when enslaved Africans were given a 3 days holiday at Christmas. Resisting oppression, the time off was used to celebrate their heritage, freedom, and community using handmade masks, native materials, and drums.

Sculptures and large-scale installations which incorporate unconventional and discarded items, including cardboard and remnants of festive customs convey this poignant posthumous expression that overlooked labor, Junkanoo traditions, and hidden social narratives.

The first major solo exhibition in Venice by renowned contemporary British painter Jenny Saville. coinsiding with the Biannale, features Retrospective art creation through over 30 monumental canvases and works on paper spanning Saville's career from the 1990s to the present.

The UK born (1970) figurative painter and an original member of the Young British Artists. lives and works in Oxford. She is noted for her large-scale nudes unconventional female subjects.

The recurring figures depicted in her work range from mothers, children, transgender people, burn victims, and cosmetic surgery patients.

As of 2018, she is regarded as the "Most Expensive Living Female Artist"

Hyphen (1999)

Influenced by Venice historical artistic heritage by Old Masters & Lucian Freuds (1922 - 2011) huge non-attractive women, places Sevulle's seminal large-scale, tactile paintings pieces on display like:  Hyphen (1999) Reverse (2002–13), and Byzantium (2018) along with newly commissioned works created specifically as a tribute to the city of Venice, in direct conversation with the masters while also redefine modern representations of the body..

Byzantium (2018) Focus (2022-24) Reverse (2002–13)

Saville rejects the "cutesy" or idealized conventions of babies in art history, children who were depicted as wriggling, heavy, and instinctual little bodies, like in the religious Pieta, Instead,

She takes children off the cross  in her art. Inspired by Renaissance depictions of the Madonna and Child (such as Michaeangelo or Leonardo da Vinci),

her subversive art transforms static religious icons into messy, contemporary realities filled with the noise, sucking, kicking, and anxiety of real child care. In her monumental paintings and charcoal drawings, Saville reflects on children and childhood not through sentimental sweetness, but through the raw, chaotic, and animalistic physicality of shared flesh between mothers and infants. Becoming a mother shifted her artistic focus toward the visceral dynamics of birth, vulnerability, and the demanding labor of child-rearing.

Monumental, visceral depictions of the human body, female flesh, self nudity portraits and anti-classical brutal expressive realism..are encountered at the exhibit, The huge canvases force the viewer to confront the hipper realistic, non- sensual physical presence and scale of the body.

Her art is rendered with thick, heavily layered oil paint, subverts traditional beauty standards, through exaggerated, raw, and tactile portrayals of skin, blemishes, and corporeal mass.

It doesn't portray empowerment of women but misery and painful anti-feminism, like in the painting of the women sitting on an uncomfortable narrow stool,

The painting of the women sitting on an uncomfortable narrow stool,

carries in its background a text by

Luce Irigaray  -a Belgian-born French philosopher, linguist, and psychoanalyst renowned for her critical work in feminist theory, psychoanalysis, and continental philosophy.

Born in 1930, she is known for her groundbreaking 1974 text, Speculum of the Other Woman

She argues that Western philosophy and psychoanalysis view the male body and male experience as the universal human norm, rendering female identity invisible or derivative.

Furthermore she emphasizes the philosophical and ontological importance of recognizing sexual difference rather than just pushing for legal or social equality, and

she advocates for the creation of new forms of language and expression that allow female subjectivity and bodily experiences to be authentically communicated.

Definition of women about their own body image or sexual perspective should not be

one dictated by men or religion,,, who historically defined women for ages.. not as a talent, intellect or other creative skills, but mainly as a womb or by assigning females magic powers- of temptresses witch-craft sorceress.

the Dorsoduro district

(vaporetto) Line 1 or 2 to the Accademia Stop, or walk roughly 15 to 20 minutes from St. Mark's Square,

May 16 - October 19, 2026

The Gallerie dell'Accademia - a museum gallery of pre-19th-c art, housed in a building complex (comprising the former Scuola Grande, church, and convent of Santa Maria della Carità (from the 14th C) on the south bank of the Grand Canal

Renowned artist Marina Abramović  makes history in 2026 as the first living female artist to be honored with a major exhibition, curated by Shai Baitel, Artistic Director of the Modern Art Museum-at the Gallerie dell’Accademia

explores in her conceptual and performance work notions like:

body art, endurance art, the relationship between the performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. as well as new notion of artistic identity by bringing in the participation of observers, focusing on "confronting pain, blood, and physical limits"

The exhibition , by whom refers to herself as the "grandmother of performance art". unfolds both in the permanent collection galleries and in the temporary exhibition spaces, and marks the artist’s 80th birthday. The art work establishes a profound dialogue - a conceptual bridge between her pioneering performance art - contemporary endurance/performance practice, and classical Venetian Renaissance masterpieces that have shaped Venice’s cultural identity.

The artistic practice is transformed into a ritual which confronts, tests, challenges and heals the body and psyche, reestablishing connections between the individual and the collective.

Visitors are invited to interact with energy transmitters, her signature mineral-embedded structures and stone beds infused with quartz and amethyst, to experience active physical and mental presence rather than passive observation. Vulnerability, silence, and sensory deprivation are explored as a meditative counterpoint to the overstimulation of contemporary art fairs.

Infused with Mineral Energy at the Museum

In the main hall for limited presentation is a pile of beef bones with photos of her parents & her Balkan Baroque (1997)

Other Iconic work :

Imponderabilia (1977), Rhythm 0 (1974), Light/Dark (1977), and Carrying the Skeleton (2008) appear alongside projections of early performances.

While new works created for the occasion bring her decades-long exploration of endurance, vulnerability and transformation into sharp relief.

One of the exhibition’s highlights is the presentation of her Pietà . Marina holding her lover Oleg (1983) predicating the future of his death of cancer, placed in direct dialogue with Pietà (ca. 1575–76) by Titian, the artist’s final unfinished masterpiece, later completed by Palma il Giovane.

This historic juxtaposition, marking 450 years since Titian’s Pietà, reinterprets Renaissance archetypes of suffering, transcendence, and redemption through a contemporary lens, underscoring the enduring role of the human body as a site of both pain and spiritual elevation.

Shoes of Departure - (1991) heavy, large unwearable footwear sculptures carved out of massive Brazilian quartz and amethyst crystals. on display

in front of the Venetian Renaissance master Paolo Veronese (1573) The Feast in the House of Levi

The crystalline shoes are conceptually designed for the public to stand inside with bare feet and closed eyes to undergo a "mental, not physical, departure".

Placing them directly in front of this extravagant banquet sets up a direct contrast, which symbolically invite the viewer to abandon the excesses of the material world depicted in Veronese's feast and depart/ transcend into an intimate, spiritual, and meditative realm

On Second Floor of the museum - Paulo Nazoreth Öµ Algebra. Exhibit

The solo exhibition of contemporary Brazilian artist Paulo Nazareth. is presented by the Pinault Collection and curated by Fernanda Brenner. It spans over two decades of his work which explores colonial cartography, systemic racism, migration, and the unhealed fractures of history, through the artist's ongoing, barefoot journeys for over 15 years across the Americas and Africa,

The journeys tread the same ground as his ancestors who were enslaved and stripped of their shoes as a mark of subjugation. The human's naked dirty feet cast a memory of slaves who were transported over seas,

Named after the Arabic word al-jabr ("to set broken bones") to reflect a methodology of historical repair, it is expressed through a salt line running through the galleries that gradually reveals the outline of a tumbeiro (a ghost slave ship), alongside works like Notícias de América..
